Open Burning Information

Open brush burning in Massachusetts is regulated by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection and enforced by the local Fire Department. Brush burning season starts January 15 through May 1.  A valid permit obtained (online or in person) from the Holden Fire Department is required. Permits are $20 for the season.

Permits are obtained by using the online system below or applying in person at Fire Headquarters from 8:30 a.m - 4:00 p.m. daily through May 1.

 
NOTE: Open burning begins at 10:00 a.m. All fires shall be extinguished by 4:00 p.m. Firefighters will conduct spot checks during burning season. The Fire Chiefs reserve the right to deny open burning on any day due to weather or environmental conditions.

OBTAINING A PERMIT FOR OPEN BURNING:
1. Apply for a permit at Fire Headquarters between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Administration Division will assist you in purchasing a permit.

2. Buy a permit online:

  1) Valid credit card
  2) Email address
  3) Agree to terms & conditions of the open burning regulations
  4) Pay $20* fee online

Permits are valid through May 1.  You will be assigned a permit number which will be required each time you burn. You must activate the permit each time you burn by clicking this link: to activate your permit click here, between 4:00 p.m. the day before up until 9:00 a.m. the day of brush burning.

OR

Call the Fire Department voice mail at (508) 210-5650 ext. 7 the day before burning or morning of burn before 9:00 a.m. Leave your name, date, address, and burn permit number. This is voice mail only system.
