Open Brush Burning


Open brush burning in Massachusetts is regulated by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection and enforced by the local Fire Department.

Town of Holden Fire Department Brush burning season starts January 15 and ends May 1.  A valid permit obtained, online or in person, from the Holden Fire Department is required. Permits are $20 for the season. Exact cash or checks made out to Town of Holden are acceptable.

Open burning begins at 10:00am. All fires shall be extinguished by 4:00pm. Firefighters will conduct spot checks during burning season. The Fire Chiefs reserve the right to deny open burning on any day due to weather/environmental conditions, or reckless burning.

1. Apply for a permit at Fire Headquarters Administration Division between 8:30am and 4:00pm, Monday through Friday.

To purchase online, you will need a valid credit card, a valid email address, agree to the terms & conditions of open burning regulations, and pay $20 online fee.

Once permit is purchased, a number will be issued. This makes the permit valid and is required each time you activate permit to burn.

Activate the permit EACH TIME you burn by clicking this link: activate burn permit here, between 4:00pm the day before and until 10:00am the morning of open burning.


Call the Fire Department's Open Brush Burn voice mail line at  (508) 210-5650 ext. 7 the day before burning or morning of burn before 10:00am.
