HOLDEN COMMUNITY GARDEN COMMITTEE MINUTES

July 15, 2019

Mission Statement:

The Holden Community Garden Committee is a volunteer organization working to provide and support Holden residents, individually and collectively, to grow food, flowers, fruits, and herbs on town land including the redeveloped property on Highland Street.  Our efforts will enable residents to enjoy the beauty of our town while developing a sense of community through cooperative action, learning about sustainable and environmentally conscious gardening as well as ethical harvesting.

The Holden Community Garden Committee also exists to foster the education of the children of Holden through the support of community gardens in local schools and community groups.  These gardens will help to develop the appreciation of future generations for the importance of agriculture and responsible environmental practices, and provide education and positive experiences through gardening and physical activity.

DPW UPDATE

The DPW cleaned around the rocks and edges of the garden and the area looks neat and cleaned up.

FISKARS UPDATE

Jess will contact Fiskars again to determine when the tools and gift card will be sent.  We are listed on the Orange Thumb website as recipients of this award.

ROOFS ON WATER CATCHMENT SYSTEMS

Jess reported that the metal roofs have been installed by our volunteer team.  Marcia will sent thank you letters to Mike Kendrick, Patrick McGary, and Brian Dale who worked on the project.

APPLICATIONS UPDATE

Since  we have room for 3 more garden plots that are not being planted, it was decided to offer a ½ season special

of $10.00 per plot.  Marcia will drop off applications to the Senior Center indicating the special price as well as contact the Landmark to ask if they will run a notice again. Marcia will also notify Wendy and/or Abby in the Town Managers Office as to the ½ season pricing.  There is still time to plant lettuce, spinach, carrots, beans and many garden centers have heavy discounts on plants or trays & flats.

DAVIS HILL UPDATE

Jess noted that the garden looks great and is being watered on schedule.

Meeting was adjourned at 7:50pm.

Next meeting will be Monday, August 5, 2019 at 7:00 in the Starbard Building.
