Holden Housing Authority

The Holden Housing Authority (HHA) administers state and federally subsidized housing programs for low income individuals and families.  Our state programs consist of 48 elderly/disabled units at Checkerberry Village (ch. 667), eight units of three bedroom family housing (ch. 705).  The HHA also administers 62 vouchers from the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program that is funded by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).  Individuals assisted by this program, rent units in the private market in Holden, Worcester and other surrounding communities.

The main office is located at 9 Flagler Drive in Holden.  In October 2023, the HHA entered into a Management Agreement with the Leominster Housing Authority (LHA), which allows the Leominster Housing Authority to bring the management experience of a strong work force to Holden, increasing the services that are provided to the HHA residents.

Eligibility for these programs is based on income and family size.  To be eligible for elderly housing, individuals must be at least 60 years old or have a qualifying disability.  Residents of Holden have local preference for Checkerberry Village.  Income limits are set by the state and are adjusted periodically.  Individuals with questions should contact the HHA at (978) 537- 5300.

The apartments at Checkerberry Village are one bedroom units.  The community building contains a room for group activities as well as a laundry, greenhouse and fully equipped kitchen.  Our tenant's association is an active group that holds monthly meetings and sponsors activities such as a weekly coffee hour, bingo games and dinners.

The 3-bedroom family apartments are located in the beautiful Holden Hills Condominium complex, an affordable homeownership condominium development.  The apartments are two story, duplex homes, with individual garages and drive ways for each household.  Residents are responsible for their utilities including Electric, heat and hot water (gas).
