HOLDEN COMMUNITY GARDEN COMMITTEE MINUTES

January 8, 2019

Mission Statement:

The Holden Community Garden Committee is a volunteer organization working to provide and support Holden residents, individually and collectively, to grow food, flowers, fruits, and herbs on town land including the redeveloped property on Highland Street.  Our efforts will enable residents to enjoy the beauty of our town while developing a sense of community through cooperative action, learning about sustainable and environmentally conscious gardening as well as ethical harvesting.

The Holden Community Garden Committee also exists to foster the education of the children of Holden through the support of community gardens in local schools and community groups.  These gardens will help to develop the appreciation of future generations for the importance of agriculture and responsible environmental practices, and provide education and positive experiences through gardening and physical activity.

PLANS FOR 2019 GARDEN SEASON AND TIMETABLE

A discussion ensued about a timetable for the 2019 Garden Season.  Since the FY 2019-20 Town Budget is still being worked on, we will  not know how much money the committee will have until the Budget is finalized.  In the meantime, we should get our application and other documents ready.  Marcia will send out the 2018 Application package for the committee to review at our February meeting.  Once any changes are made, the 2019 Application package should be ready by March 1st.  We can then post on the town website as well as Faceboook and the town electronic sign for gardeners to apply for a plot.  Jess has contacted Peter Lukes to find out about the process for applying for grants (many require a 503 C status)  and the paperwork that would be needed.

The Girl Scout who is  building the walking trail needs to get approval from the Girl Scout Council and once the project is approved, she will present her plan to the committee.

UPDATE ON DAVIS HILL

Jess reported that the Davis Hill teachers and Principal plan to meet in February for the 2019 season; no date has been set yet.  March 18 is the date for seed starting at Davis Hill after school program.

MEETING WAS ADJOURNED AT 7:05 PM.

NEXT MEETING WILL BE FEBRUARY 12 2019 – STARBARD BLDG – 6:30 P.M.
