HOLDEN COMMUNITY GARDEN COMMITTEE MINUTES
June 25, 2018

Mission Statement:

The Holden Community Garden Committee is a volunteer organization working to provide and support Holden residents, individually and collectively, to grow food, flowers, fruits, and herbs on town land including the redeveloped property on Highland Street.  Our efforts will enable residents to enjoy the beauty of our town while developing a sense of community through cooperative action, learning about sustainable and environmentally conscious gardening as well as ethical harvesting.

The Holden Community Garden Committee also exists to foster the education of the children of Holden through the support of community gardens in local schools and community groups.  These gardens will help to develop the appreciation of future generations for the importance of agriculture and responsible environmental practices, and provide education and positive experiences through gardening and physical activity.

175 HIGHLAND STREET

Marcia reported that all materials for the water catchment systems were delivered to the site.  Jess reported that the volunteers led by Mike Kendrick built both catchment systems on Saturday, June 23rd.  One of the systems does have a screen on it, but the other will need one.  Marcia will notify the DPW that both systems have been built and the left-over supplies can be picked up by the DPW.  Marcia received word from the DPW that they do not want to level off the proposed entrance by the Girl Scout project and consider that at this point there is enough parking. The DPW does not want to leave a trash can as they would like gardeners to pick up any trash and bring it home.  It is felt that trash cans on site can be problematic. The DPW is not planning to do any weed whacking or fine landscaping on the site.  Most of the plots have been planted with 1 plot available.  There are 2 community harvesting plots and 1 plot for the Senior Center.  Sarah will contact Gerry (active Senior Center member) to ask him to promote the Senior Center plot.  Sarah will also contact Joseph’s Project as well as Chaffins Congregational Church about the Community Harvesting plots.  Jess noted that we will need watering cans onsite.  Marcia took photos of the water catchment build on Saturday and will forward to the Landmark for some publicity.

Marcia also reported that there was another donation to the Community Garden from a resident on-line.

UPDATE ON GIRL SCOUT PROJECT

Jess reported that the Girl Scouts are working on their gardens after revising their original plan.

UPDATE ON DAVIS HILL

Jess reported that there is no update on Davis Hill and the watering schedule for the summer months is online.

Meeting was adjourned at 7:20 p.m.

Next meeting will be scheduled for July 10 at the Starbard Building.
