HOLDEN COMMUNITY GARDEN COMMITTEE MINUTES

September 11, 2018

Mission Statement:

The Holden Community Garden Committee is a volunteer organization working to provide and support Holden residents, individually and collectively, to grow food, flowers, fruits, and herbs on town land including the redeveloped property on Highland Street.  Our efforts will enable residents to enjoy the beauty of our town while developing a sense of community through cooperative action, learning about sustainable and environmentally conscious gardening as well as ethical harvesting.

The Holden Community Garden Committee also exists to foster the education of the children of Holden through the support of community gardens in local schools and community groups.  These gardens will help to develop the appreciation of future generations for the importance of agriculture and responsible environmental practices, and provide education and positive experiences through gardening and physical activity.

PLANNING FOR 9-17-18 BOS MEETING

Marcia stated that Wendy B. would prepare all the certificates for the meeting and that the Town Manager or Selectman would introduce the Build Crew.  Marcia left the meeting to verify with Wendy that she had all the names of the Build Team. Wendy did not, and Marcia will send email to Wendy with all the names of the men to be recognized. We should all plan to be at the BOS meeting at 6:45 pm on September 17th.

HOLDEN COMMUNITY GARDEN – ISSUES

There seem to be no issues.  Sarah stated that she brings produce to the Senior Center at least once per week.

There also seems to be no issues with pests – Marigolds and scented geraniums seem to keep the pests away.

PLANNING FOR GET TOGETHER FOR GARDENERS

Jess will email all invited guests to determine if 10/2 or 10/9 would be the best date for the meeting. Jess will then notify us what date is selected and we can plan this event by email. Marcia will contact Peter regarding bringing refreshments to the meeting and if allowed.

OLD BUSINESS

Susan W. has received some donations from 2 contributors and does not need assistance from us for the Davis Hill Spaghetti Supper.

Jess started research on several grants and will work on the list further.  She was contacted by the Holden Garden Club that while their primary focus is to donate to schools, they will bring up a possibility of donating to our organization.  Raising monies and applying for grants should be our main focus during the fall and winter months, as well as determining if expansion of the garden with raised beds is financially feasible.

We are still waiting to learn if any research was done by the Forestry Division regarding the safety of building a walking trail on the back wooded area between the Community Garden and the school parking lot.  Marcia will follow up on that.

MEETING WAS ADJOURNED AT 7:10 pm.

THE NEXT MEETING WILL BE THE GET-TOGETHER FOR GARDENERS – DATE TO BE DETERMINED
