Infiltration/Inflow Project I

The Town of Holden Department of Public Works, Water & Sewer Division is currently in the process of sealing and lining numerous manholes, as well as replacing many manhole frames and covers throughout town as part of its Capital Improvement Plan Project I. This work is part of a 10-year plan to inspect and repair the Division’s sewer infrastructure to reduce Infiltration and Inflow into the sewer system.  Infiltration is water entering the system from the ground as a result of leaking pipe joints or pipe connections.  Inflow is the direct connection of sources that should not be connected into the sewer system.  Examples of inflow include house gutters, sump pumps, and catch basins.  The Division pays to treat the amount of sewer that travels through the pipes, therefore any flow that is in the sewer that should not be there is paid for.

The project started with manhole inspections by Weston & Sampson Engineers looking for leaks and signs of infiltration in the manholes. They also inspected the manhole frames and covers for cracks or chips that could allow rain runoff from the street to enter into the sewer manhole.  The results of these inspections were compiled into a construction project to make the appropriate repairs. Diversified Infrastructure Services if performing the repair work, which is expected to be complete in May 2017.
