Director’s Report

Programs:

Denise said that a terrific job is being done with the Before and After School Programs. Davis Hill and Mayo Schools have maximum capacity in the mornings and the afternoons with 52 children at each site. Dawson has 30 enrolled in the mornings and 51 in the afternoon. We currently care for 289 children on a daily basis. We have maintained great numbers this school year.

Denise said that we still have people enrolling in adult classes and currently have 8 people enrolled in Zumba; Hatha Yoga (Tuesday and Thursday mornings) – 22 registered; Re-Shape – 11 enrolled; Cross Country Skiing – 4 registered; Yoga for Every “Body” – 10 participants; CCYOP – 22 registered. We will be offering a wellness class at the end of Feb. which will focus on taking time for oneself – with nutrition, fitness, meditation - helping to enrich one’s health and well-being. Lisa asked where classes used to be. Denise replied Yoga was at the Light Department but it is now here. The larger classes are still at Mountview and Mayo. Nancy asked if we could redo another area to fit more classes. Denise answered that the only other area is too awkward for classes but thinks it would be good for Archery. Lisa asked if the building was soundproof and Denise said that we can’t hear the classes when they have them.

Youth Class: We registered 48 young athletes for our youth wrestling program. We had to divide it into 2 classes to accommodate everyone. It was a terrific way to christen our new studio.  Nancy asked how many coaches there were. Denise answered that there are 3 coaches and they bring in guest wrestlers.

Miscellaneous:

Many thanks extended to the Recreation Committee members and your families for a job “well done”. While the weather was less than ideal, we still managed to welcome Santa to Town and satisfy all the children that wanted to sit with him.

400 “goodie bags” were put together, and 150 were distributed by Santa. I was able to give the After School Program children at all 3 schools a bag as well. I sent thank you notes to both Santa and the pastor at the First Congregational Church. I also sent a press release to the Landmark thanking everyone. We collected $32.67 from the donation jar. It was mentioned that more money was raised last year. Denise said that numbers were down due to poor weather conditions; hopefully next year’s weather will be better. The Recreation Committee members would like to meet with the Winter festival Committee members when they begin their planning for the next festival so that both committee’s end up working cooperatively with each other.

We moved into our new facility on Monday, December 15. We were able to begin wrestling class in the studio on Dec. 5, as originally planned, and we just started our Tuesday and Thursday morning Hatha Yoga class in the studio. We are hoping that we will get positive responses for a new teen Yoga class scheduled to begin Jan. 27 at 2:30p.m. to accommodate the Wachusett students. Melissa suggested mini programs during school breaks like February vacation. Denise has thought of doing this, but there isn’t enough time to get things organized for February. We might be able to do something for April.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 p.m.

The next Recreation Committee meeting will be held on March 10, 2015 @ 7:00 p.m. at the Recreation Office.
