The minutes of April 11, 2017 were accepted 3-0.  Robin Grady abstained.

Director’s Report

Denise opened the meeting with a heavy heart due to the loss of a true friend and supporter of Recreation, Nancy Owens.  Nancy was a wonderful, caring energetic and enthusiastic woman who reached out, touched and supported many activities and organizations in Holden.  A thank you letter was received from the Girl Scouts for our donation.  There is a nice picture in the annual report including Nancy.  Also her husband, daughter and grandson accepted an award from The Holden Grange.

Programs:

Denise went over the numbers for the children’s programs:

Before/After School Programs – Dawson After School Program has 2 openings and the other morning and afternoon school programs are at capacity.  Even at this late date people are still accepting spaces.  We are currently caring for 310 children on a daily basis.

Adult Programs - started mid-April

Barre-Bell – 13 Enrolled; Barre/P90X – 6 registered; Butts & Gutts – 6 registered; CCYO - 15 registered; Gentle Hatha Yoga – 6 enrolled; Hatha Yoga – Tuesday and

Thursday – 19 registered; Hula Hoop – 9 enrolled; Meditation (scheduled for June 2) – 5 currently registered; PiYO – 8 registered; Time Out – 3 registered; Yoga for Every “Body” – 7 registered. Both women’s volleyball and men’s basketball continue to attract positive numbers.  Basketball ends this month and volleyball ends mid-June

Pre-School Yoga Class – 4 Lil Yogi’s are registered.  There are pictures on the Holden Recreation Facebook page!

Summer:

Employment – Denise has interviewed and hired 23 new staff needed for the summer.  Of the 23, 8 are WSI’s and lifeguards.  Many staff in the After School Program have been hired to fill open slots in the Half Day Program.

Non-Resident Passes – Non-resident pass holders are very appreciative to be able to use our pool.  Currently there are 75 passes left.  There’s a good possibility of an increase in the sale of day passes, which could potentially be more of a problem.  Lisa questioned the price increase in the non-resident passes and its effect on the budget.  She also wondered if the income from sales would cover the expenses.  Hard to answer as there is nothing to compare it to.  She also asked how we handled the complaints about the increase.  All complaints were directed to the Town Manager’s Office.  Programs are available to non-resident non pass holders, however the price is double which is still less expensive than surrounding towns. To stay and swim after class they will have to purchase a day pass.

Registrations – Registration was held this past weekend.  Money collected from Saturday, Sunday and Monday totaled $35,514 for passes and classes.  We registered 430 children in the classes, not including the All Day Program.  The All Day Program is an 8 week program with 65 children registered per week.  The total enrolled is 520.   Members questioned who sets the price, and can the Selectmen have any influence on pricing.  Denise sets pricing.

Pools – The cover is off the family pool, but the lap pool is remaining covered until a pump is repaired which we should have by tomorrow.  The pools are scheduled to open weekends only starting June 3, from noon – 4:45, weather permitting.

Miscellaneous:

On Tuesday April 18, the fields were released for the Holden Youth Sports Leagues. The coaches are ecstatic.   The tennis courts at Mountview will be seal-coated and painted.  New England Sealcoating, Inc. was the low bidder with a quote of $12,717.  The water at Eagle Lake is going to be lowered 5’ because the dam needs repair work.

Motion made by Erin seconded by Lisa to adjourn at 7:55 p.m.

The next Recreation Committee meeting will be held on September 12, 2017 @ 7:00 p.m. at the Recreation Office.
