Recreation Committee Meeting Minutes

November 13, 2018

Lisa Post called the Recreation Committee meeting to order at 7:05 p.m.

 

Motion made by Melissa Staiti to accept the minutes of October 9, 2018, seconded by

Robin Grady.    Accepted 3 – 0.   1 Abstained

 

Director’s Report

Before/After School Programs – All 3 schools are at maximum capacity, with 52 children enrolled in both the before and after programs.  There has been significant movement from the wait list.

Adult Programs – The second session of classes has just begun.  Classes include Butts and

Guts – 8; Cardio Kickboxing & Kettlebell – 7; CCYO – 20; Gentle Hatha Yoga – 6; Hatha Yoga – 19; Re-Shape – 5; Yoga for Every “Body” – 6; Men’s basketball and women’s volleyball drop-in programs continue on Thursday evenings with good numbers.  A drop-in women’s basketball program started tonight at Mayo gym.  Denise spoke with one of the participants, she runs a drop-in basketball at Davis Hill on Monday’s.  There is talk of possibly combining resources, along with a possibility of a summer league at the Dawson Recreation Area.  The Wreath making class scheduled for December 4th with 12 registered.

Children’s Classes – ImPress (Improve performance, resistance, endurance, speed and strength) is for teens beginning in December.  Kid’s Yoga “Let’s Play” for children ages 5-9 – 7; Cake decorating was held last week with 14 boys and girls ages 8-15; Babysitter’s Training class was held October 25th with 15 boys and girls ages 11-14.  An additional class will be held January 31st to accommodate the wait list, and is full.  Another class is scheduled for February 20th.  A Gingerbread House class is scheduled for December 14th for children ages 7-15 and their parent, this class has sold out with 18 registered.  Melissa suggested an ornament making class.  Denise will look into it for next year.

 

Miscellaneous:

The Town Planner, Pam Harding, has requested that the Committee review the Master Plan and provide feedback.  Rob Owens is our representative on the Master Plan Committee.  The Committee reviewed the Master Plan, resulting in the following, which Denise will report back to the Town Planner.

Denise submitted a 5 year capital budget request.  Projects for FY 2020 include filling cracks, painting and sealcoating the basketball and tennis courts at Dawson Recreation Area along with painting pickleball lines on the paddleball and single tennis courts; addressing the wetness issue on the field at Mayo and placing new landing impact material under the equipment on the playgrounds.

 

The main drains for the pools have been received by South Shore Gunite, they will be doing the installation.  Due to water temperature it is scheduled for May 10, 2019.

 

A league director’s meeting has been scheduled for January 2, 2019, to discuss the field assignments for next spring, summer and fall.  Mayo school will be off line for the summer and fall.

 

The police, fire and light departments have been notified about Santa’s arrival on Saturday, December 1st at 5:00 p.m.  Santa has been contacted, mark your calendars.  We will again welcome Santa on a fire truck and provide hot chocolate and popcorn for the visitors.  The Girl Scouts are filling the “goodie bags”.  Denise purchased enough goodies to fill over 300 bags. The DPW has been contacted for their assistance.  Robin Grady has a key to the church and will check with Pastor John about using the space.  There will be no Winter Festival this year.

The next Committee meeting will be held on Tuesday January 8, 2019 @ 7:00 p.m. in the Recreation Office.
