Recreation Committee Meeting Minutes – October 9, 2018

1.  Members Present:  Melissa Staiti, Robin Grady, Lisa Post, Rob Owens

2.  Members Absent:  Erin Bradbury

3.  Others Present:  Denise Morano, Recreation Director

Meeting of the Recreation Committee was called to order at 7:01 p.m. by Lisa

Denise began by asking the members to review the minutes from the September 11, 2018 meeting.

Minutes from the September 11, 2018 meeting:  Motion to accept the minutes as written was made by Robin and seconded by Melissa.  Minutes were accepted.

Director’s Report:

Denise reported that all 3 schools have reached maximum capacity for the Before and After School Programs.  Rob asked if there were children on any wait lists and if there was anything we could do to get them enrolled.  Denise said there were about 15 on wait lists between the 3 schools and because of staffing issues it’s too difficult to increase capacity.  She said there is usually a lot of movement from lists.

Denise reviewed the adult classes and programs and the enrollment numbers for the 1st session.  Session 2 would start at the end of October or early November.  Zumba is a new class being offered this month, and there are slots available for the wreath making class, which has 6 currently registered.

A babysitter’s class is scheduled on Oct. 25, a half day of school, with 15 registered.  There is enough interest for another class, but because of the instructor’s schedule, it will probably have to wait until January.  Cake decorating is scheduled for election day, and the class is full.  We try and schedule classes on half days or no school days to give the children an option to do something different.  Another session of Kid’s Yoga – Let’s Play will start in November.

The pools have been covered, and the bubble has been repaired in the family pool.  The main drains are on back order, but Denise is hopeful that the manufacturer will send them out so they can be installed this month.

The Department of Early Education and Care has renewed our licenses for another 2 years, after the licensor successfully reviewed our files, policies, procedures and interviewed several staff members.

We had a Pickleball demonstration and 12 people showed up.  Men and women (4 of us new to the sport) played for 2 hours.  It is the fastest growing sport in the United States.  It not only provides a physical workout, but the social and emotional support is a big part of the interest.   The age range was 50 and over.  Because of the rains on Tuesday evenings, we will begin again in the spring.  Denise would like to get the paddleball court and 1 tennis court lined to accommodate Pickleball.

Next Recreation Committee Meeting is scheduled for November 13, 2018 at 7:00 p.m.

Meeting adjourned at 7:38 p.m.
