Director’s Report:

The summer classes and programs were discussed.  The numbers were down from previous years, probably due to the increased fees for the non-resident passes, and the weather.  The staff did a wonderful job, and handled all their responsibilities without any difficulty.  The main drain covers in the lap pool are scheduled to be replaced Oct. 8, along with the hardware on the drain cover in the family pool.  The pebble tech “bubble” in the family pool will be repaired this week.  The covers will go on the pools sometime this week, to help reduce the amount of leaves that get caught in the water.

Denise reported on the numerous adult classes being offered this month, and the number of registered participants.  She also stated that men’s basketball and women’s volleyball are drop-in programs and they will start later this month.  Zumba is scheduled for October.  A wreath making workshop is scheduled for Dec. 4.

The Before and After School Programs have maximum capacity – 52 children in the mornings and afternoons – at Dawson and Davis Hill Schools.  Mayo has 52 in the morning and 49 in the afternoons.  The registration process went flawlessly having registration on 3 separate days.  Robin asked how this was done, and Denise stated that she did schools alphabetically, with Davis Hill registration on Aug. 1, Dawson on Aug. 2 and Mayo on Aug. 3.  We will continue with this registration process moving forward because there weren’t any issues.

Children’s classes have strong registrations.  A babysitter’s training class is sold out.  Robin asked if another class will be added.  Denise stated as soon as the instructor has an available date we will contact the wait list participants.  There are enough on the wait list for another class.  The Kid’s Yoga – Let’s Play class is sold out also.  A November cake decorating class is planned for November, with 11 currently enrolled.  Robin asked how many can attend, and Denise answered 15.

Denise reported that all fields were released for play on Aug. 25, and said that a number of compliments have been received about the condition of the Davis Hill large fields which were offline.  Erin asked when they were offline, and Denise said for the spring and summer season.  They were aerated, top dressed and seeded.  Cost was approx. $18,000.

The 3 elementary schools have to be re-licensed in October so the before and after school programs can operate.  All paperwork had to be submitted online – documents submitted years earlier all had to be resubmitted.  The licensor visited Dawson School today, unannounced.  The site-coordinator reported to Denise that he asked numerous questions and looked through files.  He will also visit this office to review staff files, paperwork, etc., also unannounced.  Melissa commented on how pleased and happy she was with the All Day Program, stating that the staff really care about all the children.

An introduction Pickleball, the fastest growing sport in the United States, will be offered Tuesday, Sept. 18 on the paddleball court at the Dawson Rec. Area from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.  People will have the opportunity to watch a demonstration, and play.  Equipment will be provided.  Erin asked what is Pickleball, and Denise said that it is a combination of tennis, badminton and ping-pong, using a paddle.

Santa is scheduled to arrive in Holden on Saturday, December 1 at 5:00 p.m.

Next Recreation Committee meeting is scheduled for October 8, 2018 @ 7:00p.m.

Meeting adjourned at 7:42 p.m.
